The Best Place To Unwind In The World: Isla Grande, Colombia
Jan 15, 2024 By Juliana Daniel

The giant Caribbean island of Isla Grande is a popular destination for weekend getaways. The lovely white sand beaches and clear blue ocean are my favorite part of this area. This is the best spot for me to get away and relax.

This Caribbean haven is a favorite with vacationers hoping to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and those in search of the most incredible summer destinations. Plus, what's the deal? From Cartagena, you can get there in an hour by boat.

The Beautiful Island of Isla Grande, Colombia

The Rosario Islands are a group of small islands off Colombia's coast, including the popular tourist destination Isla Grande near Cartagena. Those who live there primarily have an African heritage and make a living via fishing and coconut farming.

What a perfect combination: two of my favorite foods! There are no automobiles or roads on the island, but there are many walking routes, making it an even more relaxing destination. Paths may be found around the island's southern shore, and signs indicate the various ways.

Besides that, most tourists come to Isla Grande to relax on the island's pristine beaches surrounded by swaying palm trees. Due to a lack of resources and internet connectivity, you'll be forced to unwind and appreciate one of the world's hottest spots.

Directions To Isla Grande

Many visitors take the short trek from Cartagena to Isla Grande with a tour group. If you're traveling solo, you might be wondering how to get to Isla Grande.

Boats leaving the significant pier, El Muelle La Bodeguita, close to the Old City of Cartagena, will take you to Isla Grande. The cheapest time to use this public boat is between 8 and 10 in the morning, when tickets cost 55,000 COP.

The one-hour boat voyage is not a comfortable ride, though, so keep that in mind. Hiring a private boat after 10 a.m. will cost you additional money. The return boat departs Paraiso Secreto at 2:30 p.m. The public boat travel return only runs at that time of day.

Hotel Options In Isla Grande, Colombia

The lodging options on Isla Grande are satisfactory. There is an excellent variety of hotels and hostels from which to pick. The most excellent hotels, however, tend to sell out quickly, so planning is essential. The following lodgings struck me, and I'll explain why:

Eco Hotel Las Palmeras

The brightly colored bungalows at this affordable hotel are spread out along winding pathways lined with tropical plants. The atmosphere is relaxed, and the staff is kind and accommodating. They will advise you on the finest trips to snorkeling, diving, and more.

Playa Libre, the island's most famous beach, is a quick stroll away. The Eco Hotel Las Palmeras is ideal for individuals who prefer quiet getaways. There's no way to connect online, and your phone may be charged only at night.

El Hamaquero, an Eco-Hotel

The luxurious Ecohotel El Hamaquero has one of the island's most desirable settings. It's situated on the lake, after all! As a bonus, there is a private pool and a spacious terrace for lounging.

Guests may enjoy the ocean view from their cabana and dine at the reasonably priced on-site restaurant. Each cabana has a hammock so guests can relax and enjoy the stunning sunset while overlooking the water. You'll get the opportunity to experience one of the world's most breathtaking vistas.

San Pedro de Majagua Hotel

San Pedro de Majagua is a contemporary hotel on Isla Grande that offers a beach, lounge spaces, gorgeous grounds, hammocks, and an abundance of trees in which to unwind. The hotel's rooms are as bright and airy as a beach cottage, giving guests the impression that they are there. If you're not used to the heat and humidity, don't worry; each room has air conditioning.

Cocoliso Resort

The accommodations at the Cocoliso Resort are spotless and have air conditioning and access to resort amenities, including the pool with a bar and a waterslide.

They will also provide complimentary transportation to and from the city of Cartagena. In all likelihood, it's already factored into the hotel rate. A restaurant is on-site, and guests may also grab food at the poolside bar. Convenient!

My Casa Nativa

My Casa Nativa is an excellent hostel in this area. It's one of seven such hostels run by the Paraiso Secreto organization. This hostel is one of many in the area, yet it provides an enjoyable environment for guests. This hostel has all you need for a memorable stay: a secluded beach, individual rooms, inexpensive hammocks, and friendly, helpful staff.
